Shaolin Soccer (2001) - dir. Stephen Chow

Overly silly slapstick from Hong Kong funnyman Stephen Chow. The film never pretends to take itself seriously which is both a good and a bad thing… at under ninety minutes the humor is tiresome. Obviously this would appeal to some (mostly the younger crowd, methinks) and it wasn’t without its fair share of laughter… but the film takes far too long to get going.

They don’t start playing soccer until over a third of the way through the film, and all of the humor prior to the sports action seems a bit forced. It’s there for the sake of being there. Now, now, I understand that this is a comedy… but the plot could have been a bit more… er… involved? It’s not a film for everyone and it just wasn’t for me. It’s like a Chinese Happy Gilmore.
