Goodfellas (1990) - dir. Martin Scorsese

I used to blindly hate Mr. Scorsese, and it was because I had only seen Shutter Island, Cape Fear and Goodfellas. I was wrong about Scorsese (very, very, very wrong) but keep coming back to this classic and I’m still left with boredom and disgust. Aspects of Goodfellas are splendid - both De Niro & Pesci put on terrific performances… but it’s nothing close to their performances in Raging Bull.

Goodfellas is essentially an hour too long, entirely too violent, and Ray Liotta should never ever be the lead actor in a film. The big scenes (“Funny how? Like a clown? Do I amuse you?) are terrific… but there’s so much lull. Maybe it’s just me but…
